Top of Mind Thursday May 11, 2017: No Laughing Matter?

Top of Mind Thursday

If nothing else, many actions of the Trump administration have provided plenty of fodder for late-night talk show hosts and other comedians. The recent United Airlines customer-dragging incident has gotten its fair share of attention as well.

Some people are offended by this. But laughter is our way of helping defuse a tense situation.

There are some brands that take their share of ridicule with a good sense of humor. Immediately after the United airline, a tweet was circulated with the Southwest logo saying “We beat the competition. Not you.”

It’s unlikely this was actually created by Southwest, but it reflects the style and tone of what customers believe is the Southwest brand.

Many brands from JetBlue to Pizza Hut to Oreos have jumped in with quick humorous tweets or ads that lighten the mood and make us laugh.

When you take yourself too seriously, not only do you open yourself up to others ridiculing you,  you also make us wonder what’s really going on. What are they hiding? Why do they seem to not be able to laugh with us?

Does your company have a healthy sense of humor? Are you prepared to lighten the mood when things get tough?

Top of Mind Thursday May 4, 2017: May the Fourth Be With You

Top of Mind Thursday

Today is Star Wars Day…the day when we can legitimately say, “May the Fourth be with you.”

Hard to believe, but it’s been 40 years since the first installment of Star Wars graced the silver screen. And yet a generation of kids whose parents may not have been conceived in 1977 know what this phrase means.

It’s over half a century since Star Trek told us to go where no man has gone before. Fedex told us they would deliver “absolutely, positively” overnight in 1978,and it’s been 18 years since Geico introduced that pesky Gecko telling us 15 minutes or less would save us 15% on car insurance.

These phrases stick with us because they’re simple and straightforward. But most importantly, they have been repeated over and over thousands of times for each of us.

Repetition creates association and recall. The question is, what phrase are your customers remembering about your business? May the force of recall  be with you.
