Top of Mind Thursday January 26, 2017: She Lit the World Up With Her Smile

Top of Mind Thursday

Yesterday, television and movie star Mary Tyler Moore passed away at the age of 80.

Much of the world knew and loved Mary (MTM) from her time as Dick’s wife on the Dick Van Dyke show in the 1960s, from her role as one of television’s first single career women on her own ground-breaking TV show in the 1970s, and from her Oscar-nominated role in the movie Ordinary People in 1980.

But many of us know Mary for something more important. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the early 1970s, MTM became a passionate advocate for those living with this terrible disease.

She openly and honestly discussed her life experiences with T1D and served as the public face of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (now JDRF). Her efforts helped raise millions of dollars for diabetes research, while she  served as a role model for a million kids living with this disease.

RIP, MTM. Looks like you made it after all.

Top of Mind Thursday January 19, 2017: Marching Forward

Top of Mind Thursday

This past Monday, we celebrated the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights icon who changed American history with his March on Washington in 1963.

On Saturday, the day after Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States, hundreds of thousands of people will again be marching on Washington–as part of the Women’s March.

This march, with more than 600 sister marches in every state across the nation and many other countries, is a way for many of the people who have felt disenfranchised and dismissed by the results of this election to stand together to protect rights, safety, health, and families, and to recognize the strength our country gains from diversity.

A million or more people marching across America won’t necessarily change the policies or views of the new Trump administration overnight. But it makes clear that this was not a normal election: the new president lost the popular vote and won the electoral vote with only a small margin in many states. Furthermore, his comments have insulted and marginalized many groups, including women, minorities, non-Christians, immigrants, the LGBT community, and the disabled.

We are a country that welcomes the downtrodden and the refugee, that has fought to establish civil rights for all–regardless of race, creed, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation, that has led innovation to keep our water and air clean, and that continues to support those around the world who fight for democracy and freedom.

No single individual can be allowed to turn back the progress we’ve made. So from 1963 to 2017 and beyond, we march forward.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
