Top of Mind Thursday October 13, 2016: Too Hot to Handle
This week, Samsung announced they will be permanently discontinuing the Galaxy Note 7 product.
The Note 7, which was recalled last month, has shown a propensity to burst into flames while being charged. The company issued replacement units, but those have had similar fire danger problems. In one case, a smoking Note 7 caused Southwest Airlines to evacuate a flight shortly before takeoff.
It’s estimated that the number of smartphones in existence globally this year will reach more than 2 billion. It’s one thing to add cool bells and whistles to these devices, but users expect a basic level of safety that presumes the phone isn’t going to spontaneously combust.
The big winner in this situation is likely to be Apple. As a Note 7 user, would you trust another Samsung device right away? Possibly not.
The problem has already cut more than $2B off this quarter’s earnings. It’s too soon to determine how badly the Samsung brand will be scorched.
Let this be a lesson to other companies: When you cut corners on safety testing, you’re likely to be burned badly.

Top of Mind Thursday October 6, 2016: Playing Like There’s No Tomorrow
Last night, Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants pitched a complete game shutout of the New York Mets to win the National League Wild Card slot and advance in the post-season playoffs.
The Giants had a bizarre season, where they had the best record in baseball for several months, followed by the worst record for the second half of the season. They squeaked into the playoffs only by winning the last 4 games of the season.
Yet it was enough to get them to the post-season, where last night’s victory was the difference between moving forward and going home. There are three more tough series between here and another World Series championship, so nothing is guaranteed.
But when it came time to have the rubber meet the road, the Giants knew it was about success not perfection. They needed to win this game, and they’ll have to play good enough to beat the Chicago Cubs in a best of five series next.
When it’s all on the line, you need to push your team to play like there’s no tomorrow. Because sometimes there isn’t.
