Top of Mind Thursday August 18, 2016: The Girls in Ipanema
As the Rio Olympics heads into the final days, the US is approaching 100 medals–nearly a third of those gold.
Swimmer Michael Phelps has added to his dominance of the sport with six more medals, four of which are gold.
But the real news is how many US women have come through with championship performances. From Ginny Thrasher, who brought home the first American medal for air rifle, to gymnast extraordinaire Simone Biles, who captured 5 medals for gymnastics, and Simone Manuel, who earned 4 for swimming, the American women have done an outstanding job. Just today, the US women swept the 100 meter hurdles.
Sure, there have been disappointments: the women’s soccer team failed to even make it to Rio for the championship rounds and the highly touted duo of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross left with only a bronze medal for beach volleyball.
The American women are a diverse group, racially and ethnically. They represent the drive and spirit that is what makes America great. Let’s hope they get the recognition they deserve when they head home with their new hardware.

Top of Mind Thursday August 11, 2016: The Ultimate Sale @ Macy’s
This morning, Macy’s announced it will be closing more than 100 stores–about 15% of its total brick and mortar locations.
Retailers are in a difficult position. The ongoing rise in ecommerce continues to draw shoppers away from physical shopping locations. In the last year, we’ve seen the demise of Sports Authority, as well as the closing of many Sears, JCPenney, Walmart and Kmart locations as well.
But the troubles at Macy’s are no surprise to anyone who actually tries to shop their physical stores. Several weeks ago, I left merchandise on a counter and walked out, after trying for nearly 15 minutes to find a clerk who could help me.
Contrast this with Nordstrom, where clerks are not only in abundance, but they are given tools to help shoppers find merchandise that isn’t available in the local store–shipping products at no cost to the customer while ensuring safe delivery of items using technology from Spotsee, learn more on this page.
Macy’s has never been Nordstrom, but there was a time when they did a better job being Macy’s. Today, what seems to be most likely on clearance are customers–going, going, gone!
