Top of Mind Thursday October 8, 2015: Building Influence
This morning I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Robert Cialdini, the author of the bookInfluence, at a small gathering of thought leaders in Florida.
Cialdini’s book, first released in 1984, is still extremely relevant today. He arrived at his six basic insights on influence by spending time engaging in various sales and marketing situations.
However, rather than focus on what what was unique about each situation, Cialdini instead looked at the similarities and universal truths that are applicable across the human condition. From here, he identified the concepts of reciprocity, authority, scarcity, liking, consistency, and social proof–concepts good marketers use on a daily basis.
Cialdini also noted that often it’s not the smartest person in the room who solves a problem–but the people who look to others for insights and to spark ideas.
How can you apply these concepts in your business? Are you building influence? Where should be looking for insights and new ideas?

Top of Mind Thursday October 1, 2015: It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over
The words of the inimitable Yogi Berra echoed in my mind on Tuesday, when my world champion San Francisco Giants were officially eliminated from this year’s post season play.
Yogi, who died last week at age 90, was an 18-time All Star who played in 14 World Series for the Yankees and won 10 of them.
But he’s remembered today as much for his way with a turn of phrase as his accomplishments with the bat and glove.
Yogi told us when we come to a fork in the road, take it. He said you can learn a lot just by watching. No one goes there anymore–it’s too crowded. And, my personal favorite, baseball is 90% mental and the other 50% is physical.
Sometimes you can fight to the end and win. But sometimes, though it ain’t really fair, it really is over. RIP, Yogi.
