Top of Mind Thursday June 18, 2015: Winning Warrior Mentality
On Tuesday night, the Golden State Warriors won their first NBA championship in 40 years, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 4 games to 2…and they did this without having the best player on the floor.
The player who had the most points, rebounds, and assists in the series was LeBron James–probably the best individual player in basketball today–and he wears a Cavaliers jersey.
But the best overall TEAM in the NBA this year was the Warriors. They worked together to drive the team forward, from the first game of the season till Tuesday’s championship win.
When league MVP Steph Curry wasn’t playing well, other players stepped up. When the Warriors got stuck, they changed strategies and benched some of their usual starters. And, the player crowned Finals MVP, Andre Iguodala, hadn’t even been a starter during the regular season.
Are you building a business around a star individual, or building the bench strength that wins championships? In the end, it’s the best overall team that goes home a winner.

Top of Mind Thursday June 11, 2015: Automatic Failure
What’s worse than doing away with voicemail? How about automated answering systems and emails that don’t work.
We tried to reach a doctor’s office this week to reschedule an appointment. Unfortunately, they’ve just implemented a new phone system and there was no way to get out of the automated system to reach a live person. Nothing we did–no button we pushed–got us out of this.
Later the same day, I received a series of automated updates on the status of repairs to my car, telling me how great my car is feeling and how well the repairs are moving along. The problem is the car was totalled in an accident. Not only are there no repairs being done, but I highly doubt my car is feeling much of anything at this point.
It’s so easy to set up an automated system to “help” customers. But when you over automate and remove common sense, what your customers experience is irritation–until they hang up in frustration.
