Top of Mind Thursday November 21 2019: Riding the Streaming Wave
Oh, for the good old days, when watching entertainment content was so simple. All you needed was to use your remote control to choose from the 100 or so channels on your TV’s cable box.
Content today comes to multiple devices in a broad assortment of packages. Not only can we watch shows on our laptop, tablet, or phone (or even in our cars and on our refrigerators), we can also choose streaming content from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, CBS, NBC, and now Disney+ and AppleTV+–not to mention all of the streaming sports and music services.
It seems like the pendulum has swung way to the other side. We need to subscribe to multiple services to get access to the same variety of content that we used to get from a single bundled subscription service.
Certainly, we now have many more high quality original series to choose from. The caliber of original content available on Netflix and Amazon is outstanding–and overwhelming. How much of this can any of us really absorb? And, more importantly, how many subscription services can any single individual or household afford to purchase?
We’re in an expansion phase. Just like in other industries, many of the new players won’t survive in their current form. Some of these channels will go away (anyone remember CurrentTV?). Others will merge or create alliances that allow consumers to get content from multiple providers with fewer subscriptions.
In the meantime, consumers are about to find themselves facing a tidal wave of streaming alternatives.Be careful not to get swamped.

Top of Mind Thursday November 14, 2019: The Supernatural Effect
On Tuesday evening, I attended a Carlos Santana concert in San Francisco, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of the Supernatural album.
In a world where musical acts come and go quickly, there are a few acts that stand the test of time…The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Elton John, Billy Joel, to name a few, are all touring and playing music they wrote 20, 30, even 40 years ago. Some of the songs Santana played this week debuted at Woodstock half a century ago.
On a different front, the world is preparing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth next year. We still wonder at the genius of J.S. Bach in the 270 years since his death, and of Frederick Chopin in the 170 years since his. The rhythms and riffs of African music are integrated into jazz and folk music across centuries and around the globe.
Yet, there’s been a multitude of artists whose music doesn’t last a decade, let alone three centuries.
What makes certain music by certain artists or composers timeless? We can consider composition and structure, instrumentation, or the fit between music and lyrics.
But in the end, the reason nearly 20,000 people sang along and cheered to tunes Carlos Santana had created decades ago is that these songs touched a chord. The rhythms and melodies are familiar; the lyrics evoke timeless emotions. And Santana’s message is clear: we can use the power of music to make the world a better place. Love and joy conquer fear.
That’s an effect that’s truly supernatural.

Top of Mind Thursday November 7, 2019: Advancing Success
Yesterday in New York City, the Society for the Advancement of Consulting (SAC) presented its inaugural awards for consultants who advanced the profession of consulting.
A team of SAC members worked diligently to develop the process for selection, then reviewed candidates and determined who deserved the award.
The 4 criteria used to rank applicants were:
- Client Success
- Innovation
- Advocacy/Growth by Association
- Resilience
We can adapt these criteria to fit almost any area of business:
- What do you do to make your customers more successful?
- How do you encourage innovation in your area?
- How do you advocate for others and work together for mutual success?
- How resilient are you when the inevitable downturn or crisis hits–how do you bounce back?
Andrew Hollo, honored as an established consultant, noted that he became significantly more successful when he changed his mindset to get rid of erroneous beliefs.
Amy Segami, the emerging consultant winner who paints on water, noted that all things flow. Nothing stands still. You need to understand how to use the flow to move forward.
How would you rate yourself on these four criteria? What are you doing to make sure your business is moving forward with the right mindset?

Top of Mind Thursday October 31, 2019: Trick or Treat
Tonight is Halloween–the night when kids of all ages dress in costume and knock on doors saying, “Trick or treat.”
The expectation is that their goodie bags will be filled with lots of tasty treats–without any tricks involved.
Our customers love when we treat them, too. Most organizations will focus on customer appreciation days or events and they are quick to tell us they love their customers.
But how often do customers feel tricked instead of treated? What happens between the appreciation events? Have you instilled a culture that lets staff and employees know they should be treating customers well every single day?
Too often, not paying attention to customers causes them to be spooked. And the result of that could haunt you for a long, long time.
