Top of Mind Thursday September 12, 2019: Eighteen Years Later
Yesterday was the 18th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which killed nearly 3000 people.
Most of us either know someone who was in the Twin Towers or on one of the airplanes…or we know someone who was personally touched by this tragedy.
In many ways, life has resumed a sense of normalcy. We go on with our lives. A new building stands in the shadow of the World Trade Center. An entire generation has been born and finished high school since this happened.
Yet, in many way, things are very different. We lost our innocence when the first plane hit the south tower, and we lost our sense of superiority with the crashes of those other three planes. We watched in amazement as the buildings came down in pieces, while the people inside disappeared. We were stunned to hear that over 400 first responders died trying to help others survive–and to learn that thousands of others are still suffering from ailments directly related to their heroic actions that day.
But the news is not all bad. We’ve learned to look out for each other a little more, to live our lives more fully every day, to better appreciate what we have right in front of us, to empathize more closely with those who suffer losses.
Eighteen years later, we have to make sure that experiences like this unite us, rather than divide us. We have to remember that on any given day, it could be any of us caught by violence or tragedy.
In many ways we are all still at Ground Zero, but eighteen years later, it’s our responsibility to ensure we are all in this together.

Top of Mind Thursday September 5, 2019: Thanks for the Memories
Music streaming service Spotify has revealed that their biggest area of growth is not today’s musical hits, but compilations and flashbacks of much older songs.
One of their most popular recent additions was a 50-year retrospective on the group Led Zeppelin. Other in-demand playlists include artists like the Eagles, the Beatles, and similar bands.
They’re not the only ones. Look at the recent trend in rock group-themed movies–from Bohemian Rhapsody to Yesterday to Rocketman to Blinded by the Light… and more.
This makes sense. If Baby Boomers are no longer spinning LPs, playing DVDs, or listening to the radio, where will they find the music of their youth?
But it does turn a few stereotypes on their heads. For one, streaming services are as attractive to older consumers as to younger ones. On the other hand, the audiences for the rock-based movies are full of younger people who weren’t even born when these artists were in their prime.
How does this impact your business? Are there “oldie but goodie” services you can create or bring back? And, are you considering that the target market for those services might be broader than the original audience?
Don’t discount the value of nostalgia. As the Eagles once said, you can checkout any time you like–but you can never leave.

Top of Mind Thursday August 29, 2019: Time to Think When
Next Monday is Labor Day, which used to be the traditional date for school years to begin, new TV programs to broadcast, and Fall business activities to get into gear.
But over the last few years, many areas have changed their school calendars to start sometime in August–some even run year-long schedules. While we still see a number of TV series start new seasons in September, we’ve moved beyond the summer “reruns” many of us remember from our youth. Netflix taught us that we could binge watch an entire season of our favorite programs instantly.
Some business calendars still revolve around a September start, but many don’t. Car models used to come out in September–now they are available earlier in the year. Amazon threw us all a curve by introducing Black Friday in July–which many in the ecommerce world have since emulated.
Yet, many of us still think of Labor Day as the time we hang up our bathing suits and sandals and get-back-to-business. The question is why?
To stand out from the noise, you need to do things differently. Rather than fall in line with those who are still marching to the fading sound of the Labor Day drummer, why not do something else?
It’s not too early to think about what new and creative ways you can market your business in 2020. Rather than default to the old calendar, consider doing something different and against the grain.
It’s time to think when as well as how.

Top of Mind Thursday August 22, 2019: What’s at Stake
On Monday, nearly 200 members of the Business Roundtable, which includes CEOs of many of the country’s largest companies, redefined the purpose of a corporation.
Since 1997, the Business Roundtable had said corporations exist principally to serve their shareholders–the people who invest in the business, providing the capital needed for growth.
Now, the Business Roundtable says corporations should be committed to ALL of their stakeholders–including customers, employees, suppliers, communities…and shareholders.
Some pundits are up in arms. Won’t focusing on these other audiences dilute the ability of corporations to be successful–to create jobs and profits which fund the economy? Is this a sign of impending doom for capitalism?
Not necessarily. For a number of years, my colleague Lisa McLeod has been writing about what she calls Noble Purpose. She’s studied organizations that looks beyond their own profit expectations to set goals that positively impact people’s lives. She’s found those organizations that don’t focus solely on profits are, strangely enough, more profitable.
It seems that considering the broader environment in which we work is not only good for various constituencies touched by an organization’s business, it’s actually good for business. There’s too much at stakes for organizations to ignore this.
