Top of Mind Thursday August 15, 2019: Handling the Heat
Yesterday, the temperature in the Bay Area was over 100 degrees–about 20 degrees higher than normal–and today is predicted to be more of the same.
Across the globe, the past year was the warmest in recorded history. Scientists are predicting climate change will result in even more extreme temperatures, with a new set of ecological and economic challenges based on changing weather patterns.
Whether or not you believe climate change is man-made, the repercussions are real. The question is what you and your business should do about them.
Start by understanding how the changing climate will impact your business–and your customers’ businesses. What will you need to do to safeguard your existing business? What actions are your competitors likely to take? How might you be able to help new customers?
The weather may be out of our control. But the choice is yours: take proactive action to adapt to these changes, or sweat it out and wait for things to cool down–which might be a long time.

Top of Mind Thursday August 8, 2019: Fighting the Epidemic
In less than two weeks, we’ve had mass shootings in Gilroy, CA, El Paso, TX, and Dayton, OH.
These are just the latest in an epidemic of violence. According to the Gun Violence Archive, in 2019 alone there have been more than 250 mass shooting in the US–more than one per day. Over 240 people died; almost 1000 were injured.
The incidents seem to be getting closer together and more deadly. And the carnage is ongoing at such a rate that people cannot absorb the enormity of what’s happening. Shootings occur in schools, stores, music and food festivals, shopping malls, and places of worship, among others. No location seems immune.
Maybe it’s time to reframe this issue. Rather than considering this as gun control vs. second amendment gun rights, let’s look at this as a public health crisis.
In 2018, we removed all romaine lettuce from store shelves because 5 people died of e.coli poisoning. In 2010, Toyota recalled more than 8 million vehicles because 34 people died as a result of unexpected acceleration. In 1982, Johnson & Johnson recalled 31 million bottles of Tylenol after only 7 people died due to product tampering.
We don’t tolerate fatal incidents in our food, our medicines, or the vehicles we drive. We also didn’t permanently banish lettuce, acetaminophen or Toyota cars. We’ve put warning labels on cigarettes and restricted the sale of alcohol to people less than 21 years old.
At the current rate, the gun violence epidemic will kill close to 500 people this year, and injure double that number. Epidemics aren’t stopped with thoughts and prayers, but with a focused, concerted effort to identify the source and address it.
No one is suggesting all guns should be banned. But isn’t it time we worked together to address the biggest health crisis of our lifetime?

Top of Mind Thursday August 1, 2019: An Occasion to Celebrate
Last week, one of my clients, Sonatina Piano Camp, marked their 50th anniversary with a big celebration that included free concerts, a parade with 4 brightly painted pianos, the premiere of a specially commissioned new piano work, and more.
I’m working with other groups that are celebrating their 25th and 40th anniversaries in the coming year. In each case, the goal is to find the right way to commemorate the occasion, while providing a strong reminder for key audiences (such as patrons and donors) to reconnect and rekindle interest.
A milestone event provides a great opportunity to reach out to your supporters and tell them how much you appreciate them. What if you haven’t been around anywhere near 25 years or more? Not a problem. Celebrate your first five years. Or the day you founded the company. Or a key date in your industry.
The actual event is not that critical. People love to have the chance to celebrate–especially when so much of the news in the world is dreary.
Don’t miss a chance to tell your customers, clients, and supporters how important they are. It’s amazing how a little celebration can make people feel good about their ongoing connection to you and your organization.

Top of Mind Thursday July 25, 2019: Can We Still Make the Leap?
Last Saturday was the 50th anniversary of mankind’s first landing on the moon.
This incredible achievement required hundreds of thousands of people working over many years–the culmination of President John F. Kennedy’s directive in 1962 to get to the moon within a decade.
Astronaut Neil Armstrong’s first words from the lunar landing are engrained in history: A small step for man–one giant leap for mankind.
It’s telling that Armstrong didn’t talk about the space race between the US and the Russians. He didn’t brag about this being an American conquest. He talked about mankind in general. It was an achievement for ALL of us.
Today, we have other critical challenges: mitigating the effects of climate change, curing cancer and other complicated diseases, addressing the plights of those fleeing armed conflict and terrorism in their home nations–to name just a few.
We could do well to heed Kennedy’s 1962 message:
“We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”
What we’re facing today is just as hard–and made harder when we let ourselves be distracted by engaging in competitive races between nations where someone must lose for others to win.
But if we engage together “to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills,” to accept the challenges in front of us, we might just be able to make that leap again.
