Top of Mind Thursday July 18, 2019: The Prime Directive
Monday was the fifth annual Amazon Prime Day, when millions of items were on sale on the Amazon website for Prime members.
The good news is this year, Amazon’s servers didn’t crash like did in 2018. The even better news for Amazon is that in 36 hours they sold over 175,000,000 items, bringing in an estimated $5B+ in Prime Day sales–a 72% increase from last year.
But the best news of all is how much of an impact this “Christmas in July” event has had on the entire retail sector. Such brands as Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and eBay hosted their own online sales on July 15th, and many brick & mortar chains followed suit.
Amazon took a traditionally slow, quiet summer sales period and transformed it into a sales event that rivals and in some cases surpasses Black Friday. In one sense, Jeff Bezos has provided a service to the whole industry–an immense amount of free marketing the other ecommerce brands couldn’t possibly afford on their own.
It’s wonderful to create a new event or promotion that draws business to you. But sometimes you can do just fine by riding the coat tails of the biggest player in the category.

Top of Mind Thursday July 11, 2019: Scoring Big
From the start, they were dominant. The US Women’s National Team won the soccer World Cup Title on Sunday–their fourth title in the seven times the competition has been held.
Their achievement on the field has been followed by a ticker tape parade in New York City and the ESPY award for best team of the year. Yet it’s their efforts off the field that show the team’s mettle. Earlier this year, 28 team members filed a lawsuit demanding they get paid on the same level as the men’s team.
Players on the men’s team get $68,750 for making the World Cup team; the women–only $15,000. The men’s team got $9 million for losing in an earlier round; the women’s team–$2 million for winning the championship.
In the past, the pay discrepancy was dismissed because the audience for women’s soccer was not that big and the team was not nearly as popular. Those excuses were blown away this year. Ratings for Sunday’s final match were more than 400% higher than the last match four years ago, AND more than 22% higher than for last year’s men’s World Cup matches. Plus this week the US women’s team World Cup jersey became the best selling soccer jersey on Nike’s online site–ever.
They’ve proven they can deliver on the field. It’s time to give this women’s team an even playing field off the field as well–setting the stage for female athletes to score as big as their male compatriots.

Top of Mind Thursday July 4, 2019: A Declaration
Two hundred forty three years ago, America declared its independence from Great Britain.
We’ve also had our share of shameful episodes: Slavery and segregation in the South, Jim Crow laws, and racism today. Internment of Japanese citizens and imprisonment of migrant children. Anti-Semitism, Islamaphobia, misogyny, and homophobia–including mistreatment of transgender people. Distrust and mistreatment of immigrants–in spite of being a nation built by and for immigrants.
In the midst of the parades and fireworks, the BBQs and celebrations, it’s important that we take time out to remember the words of our Founding Fathers:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Today, in 2019, the words of the Declaration of Independence still remain goals, not accomplishments. We have come far in nearly two and a half centuries, but we still have a long way to go.
