Top of Mind Thursday June 27, 2019: When Every Day is Groundhog Day
Last night, we went to see the Doobie Brothers and Santana at Shoreline Amphitheater, in Mountain View, CA. The concert was terrific; the experience afterwards, not so much.
What should have been a 10-15 minute process to leave the parking lot took almost an hour. For no good reason.
The uniformed employees who helped everyone park their car sat on the ground and watched as nearly 22,000 people all scrambled to get out of a single one-lane exit (when there were other alternatives nearby that were blocked off). Mountain View police circled the parking lot with lights flashing, but offered no assistance. Perhaps they were waiting to handle the road rage that might flare up in this situation.
Here’s the thing. This is not Shoreline’s first trip to the rodeo. The arena has been hosting 35-40 concerts every year for the last 33 years. After more than 1000 tries, you’d think they’d have figured out a better process by now. Nope.
Perhaps you’ve had a similar experience with mortgage loan companies. It seems like every employee assigned to your mortgage is working on the first loan they’ve ever seen. Maybe the process is so complicated that they all quit after one try–or maybe there’s a bigger problem.
Every business has a blind spot or two regarding their product or service. It might be something you’ve done the same way forever, or a process that you didn’t think was a big inconvenience to customers.
What are you doing to make sure your customers are not going around in circles, again and again, when they try to do business with you?

Top of Mind Thursday June 20, 2019: Whatever Goes on Line, Stays on Line
It seems like not a day goes by that we don’t hear about someone whose online comments come back to haunt them. This week it’s police officers from Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Dallas who are being investigated after racist posts came to light. Harvard rescinded the acceptance of one of the Parkland shooting survivors after discovering racist and anti-semitic Tweets he made just two years ago. And the list goes on and on.
I am continually amazed how many people will post things on social media that they would never consider saying to that individual in person. It’s as if the Internet gives them the freedom to open up and share things that would never otherwise see the light of day.
What they’re forgetting is that the Internet is enduring not endearing. The Library of Congress archives all Tweets. Google searches the web and indexes just about everything ever put online. Facebook or blog posts can be forwarded way beyond the original audience. And once something is online, it’s nearly impossible to remove it. Ask those who are trying to control the spread of inappropriate photos or videos.
What you say in a moment of anger or passion becomes part of your permanent online identity. Humor often doesn’t translate–especially satire. Something you think is hilariously funny might be seen as offensive to others.
Stop and think before you post anything that could be considered inflammatory or offensive. Whatever happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in an online post spreads far and wide.

Top of Mind Thursday June 13, 2019: It Ain’t Over Yet
The two-time defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors have been struggling to keep their title for a third straight year.
A slew of injuries to all of their major players hampered the team all season, but they fought through those to make it to the Finals. Kevin Durant, the leading scorer in the playoffs and a critical part of the Warriors success, missed over a month of playoff games due to a strained calf.
Durant was back in Monday’s game, until he went down in the 2nd quarter with a season ending Achilles tendon tear–one of the most devastating injuries a basketball player can have. The expectation was that the Toronto Raptors, needing only one more game for the title, would close the win without Durant on the court.
And yet the Warriors rallied, winning the game, and setting the stage for yet another elimination game tonight.
Can they beat the odds and do this again tonight, and, if so, then again on Sunday to win the title? We’ll have to wait and see.
But the lesson is clear: Don’t rule out a competitor because they look tired or injured or beaten up. Whether in sports or in business, we see time and time again how both individuals and teams who were thought to be out of the running somehow muster the energy and determination to keep going and stage a comeback.
Not all teams have the resilience necessary to recover from a devastating loss and play on. Many decide it’s not worth the effort to keep competing.
What would your teams do?
