Top of Mind Thursday May 2, 2019: In the Line of Fire

Top of Mind Thursday

Twice in the last week, innocent civilians put themselves in the path of bullets, sacrificing their lives to save others.

Leverage2Market LogoOn Saturday, Lori Kaye stepped in front of her rabbi during a shooting at a synagogue in Poway, CA, likely saving his life. On Tuesday in North Carolina, Riley Howell ran toward an armed gunman, knocking him down and giving others the ability to escape.

We know that first responders run towards a disaster while everyone else runs away. But how often do we see ordinary people step up and put their lives at risk to save others?

This doesn’t mean we should all put ourselves in danger in these kind of situations. But it should make us wonder, is there something we can do to provide help to those in trouble–just a small action that repeated by many others might make a world of difference.

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day–a day to stop and think about the millions of people who were exterminated in the Holocaust in Europe in the 1940s, as well as those who have died in similar genocides in the decades since then.

Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel said, “The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.”

Let us take a moment to honor all those who have died unjustly, including Lori and Riley this past week, by considering what we can each do to help heal the world by shedding our indifference.

Top of Mind Thursday April 25, 2019: Not Enough Time for That

Science fiction introduced us to the notion of time travel–traveling forward to see what will happen, and backward to view the past (which we can’t change, or the world will be irretrievably damaged, so they say).

Leverage2Market LogoEvery hour has the same number of minutes; every day the same number of hours; every year the same number of days (except for Leap Year!).

But is our concept of time really accurate? Some days are unbearably long–some days fly by incredibly quickly. Our perception of time changes depending where we are in our lives: children often have no awareness of time at all. Young parents don’t have enough of it. Those who are waiting for something or find themselves alone have too much. And those who are terminally ill find themselves savoring every second they are here.

Why does this matter? We have a multitude of technologies surrounding us, most of which promise to save us time for one reason or another. But the truth is, they also suck up time–sometimes more than the original task would have taken otherwise. They create new ways to pull us in–whether it’s social media, streaming video, or gaming–and as a result, we seem to have less time than before.

As businesses, it’s important that we be aware of how our products and services affect our customers’ time. At a minimum, we never want to make our service more time consuming than whatever alternative they’re using now. But can we consider how we can best help customers use their time more effectively? Can we add functionality that actually saves time for users, or creates a better time experience for others? Can we help users budget their time, like some cell phone apps are doing? Can we make the time they spend with us as pleasant as possible?

In today’s world, how users experience their interactions with our products and services can determine whether they come back again, or refer us to others. It’s time we pay close attention to that.

Are your customers being served? How sure are you about that? Read my article.

Top of Mind Thursday April 18, 2019: In Disrepair

Top of Mind Thursday

The world watched in stunned disbelief this week, as the Cathedral Notre Dame in Paris caught fire and burned for hours, with hundreds of firefighters bravely fighting back the blaze to save irreplaceable artwork and religious artifacts.

Leverage2Market LogoWhen the flames died down, it appears that the main part of the cathedral remained standing, with many precious pieces of artwork and religious relics spared. Several of France’s richest citizens have already pledged billions of euros toward the immense effort needed to rebuild the 800 year old landmark.

It’s too soon to know what caused the fire, but it possibly was related to remodeling efforts intended to restore the building to its former glory. What had not been well-publicized was how the condition of the much-loved cathedral had deteriorated due to lack of proper maintenance. The building was in terrible disrepair. As a result, when a spark started in the attic, it spread quickly in a structure that was filled with flammable materials and lacking in basic fire prevention and suppression capabilities.

How different might this situation have been if those in charge had taken time to correct deficiencies when they were small, before they created conditions that were ready to turn disastrous with just a spark.

How often do we focus on the facades in our business at the cost of the core infrastructure underneath?  How many times do we ignore critical changes that could keep our business from imploding?
When a well-loved landmark is badly damaged, the community comes together to support rebuilding efforts. But wouldn’t it make more sense to do what’s needed upfront to prevent a tragedy instead?

Are your customers being served? How sure are you about that? Read my article.
