Top of Mind Thursday – January 20, 2022: What if He Was Still Alive?
Monday was MLK Day in the US–honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King.
It’s been nearly 54 years since Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis. Since then, there has been movement forward and back on civil rights. Voting rights acts passed–followed by restrictive voting laws in many states. American electing a Black president–followed by one who was blatantly racist.
King told us not to judge a man by the color of his skin–yet that still happens on an ongoing basis. He told us the time is always right to do what’s right, and darkness can’t drive out darkness: only light can do that.
I wonder what MLK would have to say about the current state of things if he were still alive. What commentary would he have about our polarized world–a place where people fight over mask mandates and refuse to be vaccinated against a disease that has already killed over 5 million people globally? Would he chastise us for forgetting what he saw as the path forward to justice and equality?
Maybe he’d just repeat what he already told us:
“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
“If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.”
It seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Top of Mind Thursday – January 13, 2022: Final Curtain Call
Bob Saget. Betty White. Sidney Poitier. John Madden. Desmond Tutu. Joan Didion.
These are a few of the most notable performers, writers, and public figures who passed away in the last 30 days.
All of these people lived long, productive lives (Bob Saget was the youngest, at 65). They received respect and acclaim for their accomplishments throughout their careers.
Some–like Poitier and Tutu–had to overcome tremendous obstacles to achieve greatness. Others–like Betty White–continued to perform and delight audiences until just days before their death.
A 100th birthday celebration for Betty White, planned for next week, will now be a celebration of her life.
The problem with these celebrations, of course, is that there’s no guarantee that the guest of honor will be around to show up for the event. If we learn one thing from the time of COVID, it should be that life is not just precious but also fragile. One can appear healthy and vibrant one day and then be gone the next (like Saget).
Which is why we should be sure to celebrate the important people in our lives on an ongoing basis–whether or not they are nearing an important milestone birthday or anniversary.
My father was a key community leader in our town in Northeastern Pennsylvania. For decades, he championed programs for the disabled, low-income senior citizens, and others. Our family was grateful that the organizations he supported chose to honor him while he was still alive–rather than waiting till after he passed.
The problem with a final posthumous curtain call is that the person who is meant to be honored can no longer hear the applause.

Top of Mind Thursday – January 6, 2022 – A Year Later
I’ve just spent a week in Southern California, seeing family and helping my daughter move into her new apartment. LA traffic seems back to its ugly self and there are people out shopping like the good days–albeit with most people wearing masks somewhat correctly.
I don’t think anyone here spent much time pondering the fact that today is the one-year anniversary of the violent attack on the US Capitol. It’s been on the news, but life here doesn’t seem to be impacted at all.
How different from a year ago when we all sat glued to our TV sets wondering what on Earth was happening. Would invaders harm Congress members or Vice President Pence? Would the election results be certified?
A year later, it seems we’re in a very different place: Our duly-elected president has been installed. Vaccines are readily available to protect people from the worst impacts of the virus. People are traveling and seeing family again.
And yet we are still reacting to the latest virus variant–shutting down events and some schools and businesses. We’re suffering the long-term impacts of dealing with COVID. And we’re as polarized as a country now as we were a year ago–maybe even more so.
It seems like many of the emotions of the past year or so are being suppressed–we’re all putting on a good game face and trying to move forward. But wishing the pandemic was over doesn’t make it go away. Ignoring what happened in Washington a year ago doesn’t stop the anger and violence that’s been manifested since the attack.
A year later, we need to get on with our lives as best as possible while not losing the lessons of the traumatic times we’ve just experienced. As Winston Churchill said, those who don’t learn from history are bound to repeat it.
One pandemic per lifetime is more than enough.

Top of Mind Thursday – December 30, 2021 – Reinvention
As we approach the start of another new year, one thing is for certain: We just can’t predict what’s coming next.
Just when we thought it was safe to move to some sense of normalcy after the pandemic, we are hit by yet another highly contagious variant. Helluva way to force us to learn the Greek alphabet.
Yet through all of this, we see some people who seem to be doing well–in spite of all this craziness. What’s their secret?
Seems to me that these are the people who are able to roll with the punches. To look at what’s put in front of them, assess the situation, then pivot to take the best possible steps. It may not be what they planned or even want–but it’s what’s needed.
Here’s my prediction for 2022. Those who are able to be flexible and reinvent themselves, their businesses, and their personal lives will continue to do well. Those that are waiting for things to settle down–for the pandemic to be totally over, for life to return to “normal”–will struggle.
On the eve of New Year’s Eve, I wish you a year of health, happiness, safety, and prosperity and the ability to approach the year with strength, courage, and the spirit of reinvention.
As the Rolling Stones so wisely said, “You can’t always get what you want. But if you try, you just might get what you need.”
See you next year!
