Top of Mind Thursday June 13, 2019: It Ain’t Over Yet
The two-time defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors have been struggling to keep their title for a third straight year.
A slew of injuries to all of their major players hampered the team all season, but they fought through those to make it to the Finals. Kevin Durant, the leading scorer in the playoffs and a critical part of the Warriors success, missed over a month of playoff games due to a strained calf.
Durant was back in Monday’s game, until he went down in the 2nd quarter with a season ending Achilles tendon tear–one of the most devastating injuries a basketball player can have. The expectation was that the Toronto Raptors, needing only one more game for the title, would close the win without Durant on the court.
And yet the Warriors rallied, winning the game, and setting the stage for yet another elimination game tonight.
Can they beat the odds and do this again tonight, and, if so, then again on Sunday to win the title? We’ll have to wait and see.
But the lesson is clear: Don’t rule out a competitor because they look tired or injured or beaten up. Whether in sports or in business, we see time and time again how both individuals and teams who were thought to be out of the running somehow muster the energy and determination to keep going and stage a comeback.
Not all teams have the resilience necessary to recover from a devastating loss and play on. Many decide it’s not worth the effort to keep competing.

Top of Mind Thursday June 6, 2019: 75 Years Later
Today is the 75th anniversary of D-Day–the invasion of Normandy that was a pivotal point in the course of WWII.
It’s hard to believe it’s been three quarters of a century since 156,000 Allied troops landed in France on this day alone.
Few people thought this type of invasion could possibly succeed. Over 425,000 troops died or were wounded in the ensuing battles, nearly half of which were Allied forces. Yet this brave and brazen maneuver changed the course of the war–forcing the Germans to fight on two different fronts at once, which led to the collapse of the Third Reich.
The few people still living from that battle are in their 90s. Their time with us is limited. It’s important that even after they are gone, we continue to remember and acknowledge not just those who died, but all those that served in this effort that ultimately led to freedom for millions of Europeans.
Today we need to take the steps necessary to ensure we safeguard that freedom for coming generations. It’s what we owe to those who landed on a desolate beach in northwestern France seventy-five years ago.

Top of Mind Thursday May 30, 2019:The Agony of Defeat
Sometimes being remembered for standing out above the noise is not such a good thing.
Baseball great Bill Buckner died on Monday. Buckner had a long 22-season career in the Major Leagues, but he is known mainly for the error he made fielding a ball in the 1986 World series against the New York Mets–the error that cost the Boston Red Sox the championship.
Is it fair to judge Buckner strictly on that one error? Definitely not. But it’s human nature to base judgments on one or two shining moments–whether they represent success or failure.
How do you comeback from this kind of incident? Certainly doing your job well for years, as Buckner did, doesn’t work. Instead, you need to do something else as outstanding and public as the original incident–but something that bathes you in a positive light. And you need to take control of your own narrative, rather than letting the story control you.
Otherwise you risk becoming an ongoing icon for failure, like the poor skier whose image of a total wipeout appeared on television sets every week for years representing “the agony of defeat” as the lead in to ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Ouch.

Top of Mind Thursday May 23, 2019: A Life Well-Lived
My mother, Janet Popky, passed away early last Friday morning after a short illness. Although she had short-term memory loss for a number of years, she really had quite a good, happy life until she got seriously ill two weeks earlier.
The last few weeks have been a whirlwind–last minute flights, hospital ICUs, and a funeral on Monday. But amidst all of this, we have been heartened by all the people whose lives she touched, and the family and friends who have stopped by to comfort us with thoughts and memories.
These are the remarks I made at her funeral. We made people laugh, which would have been exactly what she would have wanted.
