Over 6500 people, mostly women, this event to hear speakers like Sheryl Sandberg, and former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Condoleeza Rice.
But it was award-winning actress Viola Davis, fresh off winning a SAG award for Best Supporting Actress in the film Fences, who was most inspirational.
She talked about growing up in abject poverty, as one of 5 children of grade-school educated parents. She talked about the taunting and abuse she suffered in school, and how she learned to run away rather than to stand there and take it. She talked about being inspired by Cicely Tyson to find a calling as an actor. She talked about how, despite her accomplishments she did not feel comfortable in her own success until just recently.
Most importantly, she talked about discovering your own story and owning it. Know who you are, what you stand for, where you come from, and where you want to go. Don’t be afraid to own your own story.
