Yesterday Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a bill that would have allowed AZ businesses to use religious beliefs to deny service to gay customers.
It was a relief to see Brewer do the right thing, but extremely disturbing to see such a discriminatory piece of legislation pass in the first place.
We’ve been down this road before. It was not that long ago that people of color were denied service in restaurants and hotels, or that “high end” establishments had signs that said NJ or D, which stood for “No Jews or Dogs.”
It is to our testament as a nation that we have rejected this kind of discrimination in the past. There’s no excuse for instituting such policies now.
Furthermore, from a business perspective, why on earth does the sexuality of your customers matter? Your customers are your lifeblood–what keeps you in business and pays the bills. Their race, religion, gender, national origin, or sexuality is totally irrelevant. Treat them like a precious commodity that needs to be nurtured. If you don’t, your competitors will.
