The weather across most of the U.S. the last week has been frightful: bitter, bitter cold combined with heavy amounts of snow and ice. Schools and businesses were closed; air travel was disrupted.
While it was impossible to predict the exact parameters of the polar vortex that turned most of the country into a frozen mess, it’s not unreasonable to expect that during the winter, someone, somewhere will experience the repercussions of winter storms. Certain locales are more likely to be hit; certain businesses are more likely to be impacted.
We would expect such entities to have a plan for how to handle such an emergency. Airlines have them, so do most municipalities and schools and many businesses. Employees are trained on how to respond; emergency procedures are put into place.
The storm that hits your business may not be driven by cold and ice. It likely won’t come with a forecasted arrival date, and the repercussions may last longer than a spring thaw. But the type of damage is likely predictable.
Put in place the processes and procedures now that will help your team weather an upcoming storm–before the storm clouds gather.
