As of yesterday, Pokemon Go, the mobile app that makes Pokemon characters appear in real-world places, had been downloaded more than 15 million times in just a week. The game has taken off more rapidly than almost any other app–even Tinder. It’s to the point where Nintendo’s game servers are crashing because of the number of people trying to play the game simultaneously.
For Nintendo, this is a welcome problem. The company’s Pokemon franchise is two decades old and has not garnered much attention recently among the general public.
The app’s success shows how quickly things spread in our interconnected, always-on world.
More importantly, though, is that this is the first in a new category of apps: combining GPS coordinates with augmented reality. What’s next? It’s hard to even imagine. But the possibilities make the smart mobile device an even more indispensable tool for millions.
