Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court issued two rulings: supporting the rights of same sex married couples to receive the same benefits as heterosexual married couples, and refusing to reinstate California’s Proposition 8 ban on same sex marriage.
It’s taken nine years for Prop 8 to work its way through the U.S. court system. What’s interesting is how public sentiment on this issue has changed dramatically during that time. Today, 13 states, the District of Columbia, and five Indian tribes all legally recognize same sex marriages.
Many people now realize this is not about an anonymous “Them,” because most of us have friends, relatives or acquaintances who are gay and impacted by these restrictions.
From a business perspective, whether or not you personally support same sex marriage is not the issue. At least some of your customers, partners, employees, suppliers and shareholders do.
