The government’s new health care exchange website has been an abject lesson in how *not* to launch a major new initiative.
Not only was the site unable to handle the initial traffic, but key functionality didn’t work correctly, registrations were garbled or lost, and frustration on the part of consumers, insurers, and all else involved was sky high. None of these issues are related to the merits of the Affordable Health Care law. However, these are the types of issues that could plague any large scale new product launch, including yours.
They are also, for the most part, largely preventable. Building in extra time for testing, working closely with partners who will be accepting and interacting with data from the site, inviting a set of Beta testers to hit the site hard and find bugs and issues in advance–these are all ways this situation could have been avoided.
The good news about websites is they are easily changed and updated. Proper attention will now be focused on fixing the problems and making this work. But it’s so much easier to get things right the first time.
