It’s hard to watch this week’s federal government shutdown without wondering what on earth our politicians were thinking when they dug themselves into this mess.
It’s almost like two young children fighting at recess. Each wants to play their own version of their favorite game, and neither is willing to hear the other out. As a result, they each play by their own rules and refuse to share the ball, preferring to disrupt the game by taking their ball and going home rather than playing nicely together.
We teach our kids to play well with others. We live in a society where people are more or less civil to each other in daily interactions. Why can’t our lawmakers operate under the same basic sense of decency? And where are the adults to maintain some semblance of order and decorum?
Let’s hope both sides wake up soon and realize how utterly foolish it is to continue this charade while hundreds of thousands of ordinary people are furloughed or without required services. Time to stop acting like children and get back to work.
