This week, as the US prepares a military strike against ISIS in Syria, the Australian government announced they have foiled a major terrorist attack in their country.
Thirteen years after the attacks of 9/11, it seems like we see just as much terrorism in the world, if not more.
Some of the players have changed names (who even heard of ISIS before this year?), but the MO is the same. While antiterrorist taskforces are making admirable progress in stopping many of these attacks, the recruits keep coming.
Military action against ISIS may be necessary but it’s not sufficient. We need to understand why so many people are drawn to terrorism, then find a way to make other alternatives more attractive.
We can’t isolate ISIS by just treating the symptoms. We need to focus on preventing the outbreak to start with.
